… it’s putting in the project markers to define the song sections. This is crucial not just for organization, but for allowing you to instantly jump to different sections of the song and for easy section-based automation.
TL;DR
- Use the action Insert and/or edit marker at current position to define each song section
- Use action Go to Next Marker/Project End and Go to Previous Marker/Project Start to jump between makers and time selection in/out points.
- Some control surfaces have dedicated buttons for marker navigation
- double-click between markers in the ruler to make a time selection
- the trim control on an automation lane will create a 4-point edit in the selected area

Just started using Reaper this weekend very helpful. I switched to Windows from Mac & Garageband and I’m liking it much better.
