Tattoo is a drum/percussion synthesizer plugin with built-in sequencer and 12 audio outputs. Sonically it covers the ground of old X0X boxes, with an EDM production twist.
Originally released in 2009, and discontinued in 2017, Tattoo has recently been moved to the ‘Free and Legacy’ page of Audio Damage’s website along with 30+ others. Today Jon explores Tattoo to see if it still holds up in 2022, or if it is too buggy to bother.
Pros:
- nice retro electronic percussion sounds
- easy to use sequencer
- easy routing to separate tracks
- MIDI only mode
Cons:
- Tiny, non-scaling UI may be hard to use screens above 1080p
- UI not always refreshing on click (bug?)
- solo buttons work as last touched (bug?)
For electronic drum sounds without samples, I think Tattoo mostly holds up. I enjoy the sounds and can live with the bugs. It was a plugin I always intended to buy one day but never got to before it was discontinued.
