On the hunt for a good clipper plugin? Try Peak Eater, it is free and open source. We tried it out briefly on stream and I was impressed, both with the sound and excellent user interface.
I find clipping plugins useful for setting an absolute limit for a sound, even if that means distorting it a bit. For fast transient sounds like drum hits it can be a very helpful way of increasing the perceived volume without the peaks of just turning up the volume.

In the time since recording this video PeakEater has been updated for native support on Mac M1 processors.
