When you have hardware MIDI devices like a synth or drum machine, there are a few ways to set it up to work with REAPER.
From the routing window of a track you can create a send to a MIDI output. You can pick up the sound of the instrument from a record armed track with an audio input.
One thing I don’t like about this way is that hardware MIDI sends can’t be bypassed/muted, only deleted.
An alternative way to set it up is to use the ReaInsert plugin, sending only MIDI. With this you can see the plugin in the TCP and just shift-click to bypass the send to the hardware.
For me this is much quicker to work with.
