As promised in the last Q&A video, here are 4 ways to add drum samples to your project using tools and functions included with REAPER.
Method 1 – Using Dynamic Split, then replacing the media source with a single sample
Method 2 – Using Dynamic Split to create a MIDI file and sending to virtual drums
Method 3 – Using ReaGate to generate realtime MIDI and sending to virtual drums
Method 4 – Using JS:Stillwell_Drumtrigger to generate realtime MIDI, modifying velocity and sending to virtual drums
These are all great options that aren’t too tricky to set up. For best results with more complicated songs you may need to apply different settings throughout the song. As always, LISTEN, and check the phase. For consistency, the virtual drums should be rendered as audio files.

Brilliant thanks again jon
What theme is this set up like?
Default 4.0
I’ve found two cool JS FX plugins by members of the community that do a great job of triggering MIDI from audio. Put them on an audio track, do some configuration, and create a midi send to another track with a Drum Sampler on it. I’ve had really great success triggering EZ Drummer with both of them.
Drum2Midi by DongleHater: https://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=188797
Drum Trigger by Eugen2777: https://github.com/EUGEN27771/JSFX/blob/master/DrumTrigger
Drum2Midi looks like a very configurable gate-based transient detector, with a velocity gain slider that works like a compressor/expander. DrumTrigger Has a scrolling waveform and a configurable GUI for setting the velocity curve. I’m honestly amazed at the quality of both!
