In this video I explain how I use the ReaInsert plugin to process Bass DI tracks through a hardware distortion pedal.

Signal chain

  • recorded signal send to new track
  • Reainsert plugin sends to output 5
  • audio interface line out #5 to reamp box Line in (DIYRE Line2Amp)
  • reamp box Hi-Z out to pedal (MXR M80 Bass D.I.+)
  • pedal to Hi-Z input of audio interface (or a DI box into mic preamp)
  • ReaInsert returns signal from connected input

Tips

  • One of the reasons to use ReaInsert is that it automatically compensates for delay so you can monitor your effect in realtime, and after recording, you don’t need to nudge anything
  • You don’t have to record to the track, you can keep it ‘live’ and render your mix with 1x Online to commit the effect to the mix.
  • You don’t necessarily need a Re-Amp box but they help for consistent results and lowering the noise floor.
  • You can also use ReaInsert to route MIDI and Audio to/from hardware synthesizers
  • I have another video on using ReaInsert with a real tape delay
