One of the challenges that came up in a recent film mix was to make clean dialog sound like it’s coming from behind a door in a bathroom, to match the action on screen and dialog actually recorded from outside the room.

It’s not a particularly difficult to solve the problem if you can imagine what the situation would sound like in real life, and you know which tools to use.

 

 

In this case it’s about as simple as putting a very small reverb on the voice (100% wet), after a filter and adjusting until I had a match. I also forced the output of ValhallaRoom to mono.

I used ValhallaRoom for this because I know it really well. I used a few different reverb plugins throughout the film.
