How to make a custom iOS ringtone with REAPER

It’s not cool to have the same ringtone as everyone else. All I’ve ever wanted is my phone to goat scream at me. Here’s how to make a custom alert sound for your iOS device.

TLDR;

  • download a sound as WAV format
  • edit sound in REAPER to loop no longer than 40 seconds
  • (Mac only) render as MPEG-4 Audio, then change file extension to .m4r
  • (Windows) render as WAV, import into iTunes, convert to AAC format, then change extension to .m4r
  • With iphone connected to iTunes, go to tones tab, drag in your custom sound
  • enable the sound in the phone settings
