REAPER uses VLC to decode videos for smooth playback when video editing. What’s complicated is all the different versions of VLC and REAPER and which combinations work.
There is actually a hidden Universal Binary version of VLC that is the best choice for macOS REAPER users right now.
If you are on an M1 mac running the Universal build of REAPER, this is the best choice because it works even when you run REAPER in Rosetta mode. Additionally, this version will work on Intel macs as well.
