REAPER 201 is a series of articles for intermediate users to accomplish specific production tasks.
On the forum, Get_Rad asked:
Is there a way to just simply remove all FX at once from a project and start with a clean slate?
There are a few ways to do this, as with most tasks in REAPER.
One simple way is to select all tracks (Command/CTRL+A), then ALT-Click the FX button on each of the tracks.
Karbomusic has a solution to completely reset and zero the board using custom actions.
How clean do you want the slate? I say this because you can build a custom action to just remove all FX or one that does what I call “zeroing the board” which removes everything and sets all faders back to zero. Just add the following to a custom action:
Just remove all FX:
Track: Select All Tracks
SWS: Clear FX chain for selected tracksZero everything:
Track: Select All Tracks
SWS: Clear FX chain for selected tracks
SWS Remove sends from selected tracks
SWS: Remove receives from selected tracks
SWS: Reset volume and pan of selected tracks.
Track Unselect All TracksJust create a new custom action and add the actions above for the result you want and run the custom action. You can assign this to a keyboard shortcut but my suggestion is to just pin it to the Actions menu since it might be a little devastating to accidentally hit that key.

@reaperblog perfect timing! Was searching the Internet for this yesterday so I can make a track template. Thankyou!
You could also use snapshots.
good thinking
An improvement to this would be:
* Track: Select all tracks
* SWS/S&M: Clear FX chain for selected tracks
* SWS/S&M: Remove sends from selected tracks
* SWS/S&M: Remove receives from selected tracks
* Xenakios/SWS: Reset volume and pan of selected tracks
* SWS/S&M: Remove all envelopes for selected tracks
* SWS: Select tracks with flipped phase
* Track: Invert track phase
* Track: Unselect all tracks
Thank you for this post, it got me set along the right track.
Perhaps also add in ” SWS: Select master track ” after Track: Select all tracks as well. Depending on your needs.
agreed. I needed something similar to this last weekend.
I can’t get the master track to reset. I’ve tried the “select master track” and “show master track in track manager” before applying reset volume and pan action. Nothing works. All other actions work as they should.
I need help on this.
Thanks.
I sort of managed to reset the master track. I used “set pan for master track” and “set master volume to 0dB” and “disable master FX”. I did not find a way to remove sends and FX.
The custom action I’m using lately is this
Custom: Full Mix Reset (visible tracks)
Track: Select all tracks
SWS: Select master track
SWS/S&M: Clear FX chain for selected tracks
SWS/S&M: Remove sends from selected tracks
Xenakios/SWS: Reset volume and pan of selected tracks
Track: Unselect all tracks
I got removal of FX on master track to work now. The only thing bugging me is the Master pan. I used “set pan for master track (MIDI CC/OSC only)” which worked, but I don’t understand what the MIDI CC/OSC only implies.
Thanks for helping!
master pan isn’t something I’ve checked, I don’t think I’ve ever panned the master track.
“MIDI CC/OSC only” means that it’s expecting a 0 to 127 value or +1/-1 to be used.
Ok. That clears that up. I don’t ever pan the master. I just want to make sure nobody else does in the studio. Is there a way to hide it? Out of sight, out of mind..
There is. For Arrange View -> Master Track
for the mixer right click on the master track Master Track -> Show in mixer and corresponding actions
View: Toggle mastter track visible
Mixer: Toggle mastter track visible
I tried to create a custom action and when I filter the commands I dont’ see “SWS/S&M: Clear FX chain for selected tracks” or anything with “SWS” or “Clear FX Chain” anywhere.
SWS extension required

Hi! I’ve been digging around and trying to find a way to reset all send volumes (the trims) to -inf – I don’t want to just mute or remove all my sends but would like to zero them along with everything else. Don’t suppose you know of a way to do this? Pretty sure it must be out there somewhere!
